Fern Britton saddles up to support Robert Winston’s Charity Cycle Challenge

Published: 4th October 2010

TV presenter and patron of Genesis Research Trust, Fern Britton has completed four overseas women only cycling challenges in Egypt, India, Cuba and Jordan. This amazing lady is about to join a group of very special women on her next ride to China this year. But she won’t be hanging up her helmet for long, as she will be heading for the next Women for Women cycle challenge to Vietnam and Cambodia in 2011.

Genesis Research Trust was founded in 1985 by Professor Robert Winston as a charity to raise money to finance the largest UK-based collection of scientists and clinicians working tirelessly to help find the causes, and therefore the cures for many devastating conditions that affect the health of mother and baby. This includes, miscarriage, premature birth, brain damage and cancer.

Women for Women cycling challenges have now been running for 10 years and over 1400 women have already taken part raising nearly £2.5 million. The China ride will be challenging and approximately 400 women will be taking part across four events. Cycling 450 km through the beautiful countryside of the Beijing region, past tiny villages and historical landmarks, the participants will experience an incredible mix of culture and history.

“Women for Women challenges are amazing, Not only do you get fit and have an adventure of a lifetime, you make lots of wonderful new friends along the way. I have personally got so much out of doing the rides myself and highly recommend them” said Fern Britton.

The Vietnam and Cambodia challenge will take place in 18-27 November 2011 and 26 November to 5 December 2011. The first ride is already full and Fern will be cycling around 400 km over five days. Starting off from Ho Chi Minh City, the ladies will ride through rural Vietnam, past paddy fields, farms and market towns. They will continue their journey towards Cambodia. Once across the border, they will enjoy a glimpse of Cambodian life: wooden houses on stilts, smiling children and water buffalo wallowing in the rice fields. Their final destination will be the famous Boeng Mealeah Temple, a fitting finish to this incredible journey.

All our rides are tough but promise spectacular scenery, camaraderie and the opportunity of a lifetime. Every penny raised is well earned by these amazing women and could help eradicate tragic medicals.
