Professor Ilpo Huhtaniemi FMediSci
Ilpo Huhtaniemi is an internationally recognised Finnish scientist who qualified in medicine and received his PhD at University of Helsinki. He is a chemical pathologist who did his postdoctoral training in San Francisco and then NIH in Bethesda. He held 1986-2002 the post of Professor and Chairman of Physiology at University of Turku, Finland, and moved in 2002 to a Chair in Reproductive Endocrinology at Imperial College London. He has received national and international honours, including a fellowship of The Academy of Medical Sciences (UK) and a honorary doctorate at the Medical University Lodz, Poland. He is the Chief Editor of the scientific journal Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, and has served as Editor/Editorial Board Member of numerous scientific journals. He has served as official of several international scientific organizations (e.g. Past President of the International Society of Andrology). His research interests include clinical and basic reproductive endocrinology, in particular the function of gonadotrophic hormones. He also has long-term interests in development of male contraception, novel treatment of hormone-dependent cancer, and the endocrinology of ageing. He has authored over 550 peer-reviewed research articles and is a frequently invited speaker in international scientific congresses.
